Hovercraft Scales: Bottom Protection in UHMWPE (PE-1000) and HDPE
We custom-make and cut protective scales for your hovercraft. We offer proven solutions to protect the hull and cylinders from abrasive wear caused by stones, ice hummocks, ice, and shallow water. You will receive a ready-to-install kit, precisely cut to the dimensions of your craft.
Which material to choose: PE-1000 or HDPE?
The choice of material depends on operating conditions and budget. We work with two main types of polymers:
·UHMWPE (PE-1000)
Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It has an extremely low coefficient of friction (excellent gliding) and high impact strength. It does not crack in severe frost (down to -80°C). Ideal for winter use, ice hummocks, and harsh conditions.
·HDPE
High-density polyethylene. A more budget-friendly option. Suitable for summer use, water, grass, and sand. It wears out faster than PE-1000 in severe frost and against sharp stones.
If you plan year-round use or frequent trips on ice, we recommend PE-1000 scales.
How to order custom-sized scales
To ensure the kit fits perfectly and you do not have to trim it on-site:
1.Measurement: Measure the length and width of the flat part of the bottom (working surface).
2.Drawing: If you have non-standard geometry, send a simple hand-drawn sketch with dimensions.
3.Selection: Inform the manager of your operating conditions (e.g., “often run over shallows”), and we will select the optimal sheet thickness.
We ship finished kits across Russia via transport companies. We pack securely to ensure the sheets arrive flat and undamaged.
Installation details for bottom protection
Proper installation extends the service life of the scales by a factor of 2.
·Fastening: Lacing or specialized countersunk fasteners are typically used.
·Direction: Sheets or “scales” are overlapped in the direction of movement (like fish scales) to prevent catching on obstacles.
·Temperature: Installation is best done in a warm room, as polyethylene has a thermal expansion coefficient. Leave small gaps to accommodate thermal movement of the material.

Can the scales be used year-round?
Yes. High-quality UHMWPE is resistant to UV radiation and does not lose its properties in either heat or frost.
What thickness is optimal?
The gold standard is 3–4 mm. It provides the best balance between boat weight and protection. Thicknesses of 5 mm and above are used on heavy hovercraft for extreme routes.
Do you sell sheets or finished products?
We can supply both full material sheets and milled custom scales according to your drawings.
